I had just saw the Smurfs for the first time in a while, and got to thinking: are they communist or what?

Look at them: Papa smurf could be Carl Marx; The other Smurfs are followers; Gargamel could be the Capitalists in the West.

I found this on the Station Eight Comment Room:

I just watched that show for the first time since I was five years old last weekend (I even still have a Baby Smurf plush from that era on my bookshelf) and I came to my own conclusion about the little blue 'shroom people: they're a CULT. Papa Smurf is the leader, the one they ask for advice, the one they call for when in trouble; Smurfette was Created by Gargamel and worked for him till Papa 'converted' her; they're not allowed to let anyone know where they live; and They’ve been tricked into knowing he's always right; probably by one of his magic potions. Vanity, the guy who wears a DAISY and carries a mirror, has gotta be gay, or maybe bi-, since he hangs out with Smurfette an awful lot...then again, so does Hefty...but still, there's only one girl. Does this mean there are more in their little village that are possible homosexuals? Brainy seems like a candidate. Oh, and how the heck do they come up with their names?! Their named after traits; how do they know what they're gonna act like? Or does their name mold them into a given behavior? Must be like the 7 Dwarfs.

The Smurfs as a Paradigm for Communist Society

The Smurfs are a what? Thats right I said the smurfs are a model of how a communist society should operate. What am I talking about you may ask ? Very well then I shall explain.

The TV show "The Smurfs" provided youngsters like myself hours of entertainment as a child, but what I am now fianlly realizing is that the Smrufs were actually a well devised piece of Communist propaganda to erode American sociey from within. What follows is a list of evidence supporting my accusations :

Have you ever notice how much Poppa smurf looks like Karl Marx. could this be a subtle attempt to get young children used to the sight of the Father of Modern communism (in Soviet Russia, large posters depicting Karl Marx were carried in parades celebrating communism.

As well Notice that Poppa smurf wears red pants, red being the color of revolution, and of the Bolshiveck party. It is also intereting to note that while Poppa smurf wears red all of the other smurfs wore white. In the 1918 revolution which resulted in the replacement of the Czarist government by the Communist party, there were two Communist factions battling for control, the reds (Bolshivek) and the whites(The actuall name escapes me). In the end the Bolshievecks won and became the ruling class in Communist Russia. Is it not an odd coincidence that Poppa smurf, the ruling member of the Smurf community, wears red while the others all wear white.

A fundemental therom of Marx's Scientific Socialism as stated in the Communist Manifesto is something to the point of "from each his ability and to each his needs". Take note that each smurf does the job that he/she is suited for i.e. Farmer grows the Smurfberries, and baker bakes all of the Smurfberry pies. Yet all of the smurfs get all that they need. In fact the smurfs do not use money or even bother to barter.

The smurfs were not alone in their world. You may ask how does Gargemel fit in to this model . Well communism is not alone in the world either. Indeed there are forces out there that seek to exploit the proleteraite for personal gain. The name of this evil is capatalism. The system by which a few select bourgiaosie controll all of the capital and attempt to exploit the working class for personal gain. Well this is how Gargamel fits into this model. Gargemel represents the capitalist bourgiaosie attempting to exploit the proletariate smurfs for personal gain. But wait you say wasn't Gargemel just trying to eat the smurfs. You obviosly didn't watch the show too well. In most every case Gargemel was trying to catch smurfs because they were ingrediants in his latest spell to create or turn something into gold. so it is evident that Gargemel is the representation of the materialistic drive behind capitalism, to increase capital at any cost.

Finally there was Azreal, Gargemel's cat. This scragely old cat fits into the model as well. Azreal represents the third world despotisms that are clinging onto the coattails of first world capatalistic nations trying to grab any scraps they can. In the show Azreal followed Gargemel around trying to catch a stray smurf or two for a meal.

I think these five points provide very strong evidence pointing to the conclusion that the TV show "The Smurfs" is indeed a paradigm for communist society.

I also figured that if the Smurfs are Communist, they should have Communist names right? I created some Smurfs of my own; you can read about them here!
